Task 2 Visual Analysis

Instructions

Lectures

Task 2 requires us to analyze the images we selected in Task 1. Visual analysis is a method of understanding design, focusing on visual elements and principles. In the strictest definition - describe and explain for the sake of the visual structure itself. However, the purpose of visual analysis can also identify the choices made by designers when creating designs, and better understand how the formal attributes of design convey ideas, content, or meaning. Visual analysis can include three stages: observation, analysis, and explanation.

Phase 1- Observation:

Involving using your own words to detect and accurately describe the visual features of the design.

Avoid reading information about design beforehand.

During the observation phase, focus on observing, thinking, and communicating your findings.

Phase 2- Analysis:

Involving considering your findings and drawing conclusions based on facts.

Consider how identified visual elements contribute to overall design principles and impact on viewers.

How were your eyes guided through this artwork and why? Apply the design concepts you have learned.

Stage 3- Explanation:

Combine your observations, descriptions, and analysis of the work with reliable sources of facts and historical background.

Task 2 Visual Analysis

Observation:

The design of this picture is in sharp contrast, with a scene on the left showing a group of fish trapped in a fishing net. The color scheme is mainly dark, conveying a sense of oppression and crisis. On the right is a spacious ocean, with fish swimming freely and bright colors conveying an atmosphere of hope and freedom. There is a clear dividing line in the center of the picture, dividing it in half, symbolizing two completely different ocean states. At the bottom of the image, the text "LESS BOATS MORE FISH" is highlighted in large font, which is a direct message and also the core message of the design. The logo of Greenpeace is located in the bottom right corner, indicating that it is a poster promoting marine environmental protection.

Analysis:

Contrast:
The most obvious contrast in the design is between the dark and crowded fishing scene on the left and the bright and open ocean on the right. In addition, there is a sharp contrast between the fish in the fishing net and the freely swimming fish. Comparison is used here to emphasize the conflict between overfishing and marine biodiversity.

Emphasis:
The phrase "LESS BOATS MORE FISH" is emphasized through the choice of large font and position, which is the focus of the entire design, aiming to attract the audience's attention and convey the core message.

Balance:
Although the image is asymmetric, the design achieves balance by distributing visual weight on both sides. The heavy visual elements on the left are balanced with the light visual elements on the right, conveying a structural stability.

Repetition:
The elements that are repeatedly used in the picture include schools of fish and fishing boats, which enhances the consistency and rhythm of the design.

Harmony and Unity:
Despite the opposition between the two scenes, the overall picture still maintains a sense of harmony through the unity of color, style, and theme.

Symbolism:
The comparison between fishing nets and schools of fish symbolizes the conflict between human activities and the natural environment. Meanwhile, the symbol of light passing through fishing nets signifies solutions and hope.

Word and Image:
The combination of text and images not only conveys a clear message, but also enhances the expressive power of the design. The combination of the straightforwardness of text and the visual impact of images enhances the effectiveness of information transmission.

Explanation:

This design is aimed at promoting the concept of reducing overfishing and protecting marine biodiversity. Through simple and intuitive visual comparison, a clear environmental message is conveyed: reducing the number of fishing vessels can enable more fish to survive. This design not only attracts people's attention, but also prompts people to think and discuss the topic of marine protection. This design is a manifestation of this mission. Through the power of art and design, it inspires viewers to reflect on the balance of marine ecology and the impact of human activities.
