INSTRUCTIONS

Project 1: Proposal

WEEK1
Our goal was to explore a cultural phenomenon or a specific subculture that is considered "sensitive," and to "frame" our research within the chosen topic. We aimed to convey aspects of this culture without altering the reality.
We were to create three detailed preliminary sketches of ideas, with each member providing their own reasons for each sketch. This included visual references, a reference list, and image sources.

Several cultures were proposed, including religious cultures, disability and accessibility, and Mehndi Art.

  • Ideas Proposed & Preliminary Research

We conducted research and investigations into disability and accessibility and Mehndi Art. Everyone participated in this process.
Ultimately, we chose Mehndi Art as the topic for our study.

WEEK2-3

  • Topic Selection & Further Research

We need to conduct topic planning and visual refinement.

Mehndi tattoo is a body art widely accepted by different cultures around the world, and it has rich historical and cultural significance. Mehndi tattoos are not only beautiful body decorationsbut they have also gradually been endowed with certain special cultural significance in long-term usesuch as during weddings or major holidays. Flowers are the most common pattern in Mehndi tattoos, symbolizing joy, happiness, and sometimes the beginning of beautiful loveechoing the most important purpose of Henna tattoos: blessings.

To promote Mehndi tattoo art. Integrating art from different countries can be better accepted by people. I plan to incorporate Chinese cloud patterns into it, which are common themes in traditional Chinese art and have profound cultural and symbolic significance. In China cloud patterns are also a symbol of good luck and auspiciousness.

I designed a pattern that combines Mehndi tattoos with Chinese cloud patterns and used it for peripheral products such as phone cases and T-shirts. I hope that by using these daily items, people can better experience the unique charm of Mehndi tattoos in their daily livesand stimulate their interest in the culture of Mehndi tattoos. Being able to understand and explore.

    Project 2: Data Collection

    Data Collection Methods:

      1.Google Form survey

    Research Objectives:
    • To promote the understanding and point of view of the public towards Mehndi
    Art.
    • To raise the public’s awareness of the Mehndi Art.
    Thesis Statement:
    • To get a better understanding of the public’s point of view towards Mehndi
    Art.
    • To get some ideas of what could be done to encourage people’s interest and popularity of Mehndi Art

      2. Online research

My group members conducted further investigation on Introduction and History,Types of Mehndi design ,Materials/tools and how to make mendhi ,Mehndi Artist.

      3.Field Study

We visited a specialized shop that designsMehndi Art and experienced the process of creating Mehndi Art firsthand. After closely observing the techniques used in Mehndi Art, we also engaged in in-depth conversations with the tattoo artists, discussing their sources of inspiration and technical details. During this time, we documented a variety of patterns, ranging from traditional designs to modern styles, enhancing our understanding and appreciation of the art of Mehndi Art.

                      Field Study 2

This is my first attempt at a Mehndi Art. In China, the popularity of Mehndi Art is not high, and many people are not very familiar with it. I have chosen a pattern that is both traditional and simple, and it only takes 2 to 3 minutes to complete. When selecting patterns
in the store, I found a wide range of choices, ranging from traditional patterns to modern art style fusion designs. When choosing patterns, I noticed that some people bring their own
designed patterns for Mehndi Art, and this personalized service makes people feel special.

    • Final Project 2: Data Collection

    Final Project: Visual Design

Among our five design ideas, we selected three for voting: fan, cup, and nail art design. Ultimately, the nail art design received the highest number of votes.

The reason we chose nail art is based on research findings that women prefer to adorn themselves with mehndi. Nail art is also widely used among women. Personally, I often get my nails done to decorate myself, usually choosing designs that I like or that have special meanings to me. This is similar to the art of mehndi. The target audience for nail art is virtually worldwide. By combining mehndi art with nail art design, we can introduce mehndi art to a broader audience.

We have created two visual designs and selected the first version as the final design.

    FEEDBACK

we need a very clear reason to support us (why we choose nails design) as our visual design. And why we choose the upper one rather than the lower one

    REFLECTION
    • Experience
This course provides me with an excellent opportunity to explore teamwork in depth. Throughout the learning process, I maintained good and productive communication with my group members. We work together to overcome challenges through discussion and find solutions when encountering difficulties. At first, we encountered difficulties in determining the research topic, and we ultimately abandoned our initial idea and chose a topic that was more in line with the course requirements. This decision laid a solid foundation for our future research work.
The design of the course aims to expose us to and understand cultures that we may not have previously understood. Through interaction with students from different backgrounds, it not only deepens my understanding of various cultures, but also enhances my ability to work in a multicultural environment. During this process, I had the privilege of learning about Mehndi culture - a field that I had almost no prior knowledge of. This not only broadened my cultural perspective, but also made me realize the importance of understanding and respecting diverse cultures in the context of globalization. This learning experience is very valuable

    • Observation
In our research, we gained a deeper understanding of the diversity of Mehndi and the rich cultural significance behind it. Mehndi art holds an important position in Southeast Asian culture, with each design carrying specific symbols and stories. We have found that this ancient tradition is not only deeply loved by the local people, but also successfully integrated with modern elements, creating unique designs that are both historically profound and in line with modern aesthetics. Mehndi's design is not limited to human art, but its unique patterns are also applied to various items such as clothing, home decor, etc., showcasing its infinite creative possibilities. The inheritance and innovation of this culture inspire our team to seek new sources of inspiration and explore how to combine traditional art with modern design concepts to create unique works. I am deeply proud of the creativity and enthusiasm of our team members, as their innovative thinking is crucial for our project.

    • Findings

This course module provides me with an opportunity to delve deeper into communication and collaboration skills. By participating in different assignments, I not only learned how to express my thoughts and feelings more effectively, but also learned how to better listen to and understand the opinions of others, especially in complex and challenging situations where I can still maintain respect and understanding. In addition, this process deepened my understanding of team work and taught me how to leverage the strengths of team members, support each other, and achieve common goals through collaborative cooperation. I also realized the importance of seeking compromise and being flexible in adapting to different opinions in a team environment. The entire semester's experience has been very valuable and enjoyable for me, and I am very satisfied with my growth in communication and teamwork.
