Typography: Letters / Understanding letterforms

The uppercase letter forms below suggest symmetry, but in fact it isnot symmetrical. lt is easy to see the two different stroke weights ofthe Baskerville stroke form (below); more noteworthy is the fact thateach bracket connecting the serif to the stem has a unique arc.

The uppercase letter forms may appear symmetrical, but a closeexamination shows that the width of the left slope is thinner than theright stroke. Both Baskerville (previous) and Univers (below)demonstrate the meticulous care a type designer takes to createletterforms that are both internally harmonious and individuallyexpressive.

The complexity of each individual letterform is neatly demonstratedby examining the lowercase 'a' of two seemingly similar sans-seriftypefaces一Helvetica and Univers. A comparison of how the stems ofthe letterforms finish and how the bowls meet the stems quicklyreveals the palpable difference in character between the two.

Typography: Letters / Maintaining x-height

X-height: The size of the lowercase letterforms. Curved strokes, such as in ‘s’, must rise above the median (or sink below the baseline) in order to appear to be the same size as the vertical and horizontal strokes they adjoin.

Typography: Letters / Form / Counterform

Counterform (or counter)—the space describes, and often contained, by the strokes of the form. When letters are joined to form words, the counterform includes the spaces between them. How well are the counters handled determines how well the words hang together—how easily we can read what’s been set.

Typography in Different Medium

Screen Type

Print Type Vs Screen Type

Type for Print

Primarily, type was designed intended for reading from print longbefore we read from screen. lt's the designer's job to ensure that the textis smooth, flowing, and pleasant to read.

Print Type Vs Screen Type

Type for Screen

Typefaces intended for use on the web are optimized and often modified toenhance readability and performance onscreen in a variety of digitalenvironments. This can include a taller x-height (or reduced ascenders anddescenders), wider letterforms, more open counters, heavier thin strokesand serifs reduced stroke contrast, as well as modified curves and anglesfor some designs.

Another important adjustment - especially for typefaces intended forsmaller sizes - is more open spacing. All of these factors serve to improvecharacter recognition and overall readability in the non-print environment.which can include the web, e-books, e-readers, and mobile devices.

Hyperactive Link/ hyperlink

A hyperlink is a word, phrase, or image that you can click on to jump to anew document or a new section within the current document. Hyperlinksare found in nearly all Web pages, allowing users to click their way frompage to another. Text hyperlinks are normally blue and underlined bydefault. When you move the cursor over a hyperlink, whether it is text oran image, the arrow should change to a small hand pointing at the link.

Font Size for screen

16-pixel text on a screen is about the same size as text printed in a bookor magazine; this is accounting for reading distance. Because we readbooks pretty close- often only a few inches away - they are typically setat about 10 points. lf you were to read them at arm's length, you'd want atleast 12 points, which is about the same size as 16 pixels on most screens

System Fonts for Screen/Web Safe Fonts

Open Sans, Lato, Arial, Helvetica, Times New Roman, Times, Courier New, Courier, Verdana, Georgia, Palatino, Garamond.

Pixel Differential Between Devices

The screens used by our PCs, tablets, phones and TVs are not onlydifferent sizes, but the text you see on-screen differs in proportion too.because they have different sized pixels. 100 pixels on a laptop is verydifferent from 100 pixels on a big 60” HDTV.

Even within a single device class there will be a lot of variation

Static Vs Motion

Static typography has minimal characteristic in expressing wordsTraditional characteristics such as bold and italic offer only a fractionof the expressive potential of dynamic properties.

From billboards to posters, magazines to fliers, we encounter all forms ofstatic typography with wide ranging purposes. Whether they areinformational, promotional, formal or aspirational pieces of designs, thelevel of impression and impact they leave on the audience is closelyknitted to their emotional connection with the viewers

Static Vs Motion

Motion TypographyTemporal media offer typographers opportunities to “dramatize” type.for letterforms to become “fluid”and “kinetic”(Woolman andBellantoni,1999). Film title credits present typographic informationover time, often bringing it to life through animation. Motion graphics.particularly the brand identities of film and television productioncompanies, increasingly contain animated type.

FEEDBACK

week6

Pay attention to adjusting font spacing to make the layout more reasonable

week7

When designing titles, it is necessary to understand the meaning of words in order to design them

REFLECTIONS

Experience

Participating in this task has gained a lot of experience that I have not learned before. I have learned how to layout, the rules of layout, and the skills of making layout. This task is very interesting for me, and I haven't done a similar job before. I need to read more information to make my ideas better.

Observations

Learn how to align, arrange, layout, and design. Watching more designs allows me to expand my thinking.

Findings

There are many rules to pay attention to in this task, and each one should be done correctly. The design of the layout will affect readers, and how to do a good job in a particular area requires a lot of time to study and design.

FURTHER READING

Design permeates every aspect of our lives, whether as objects or as the products of an individual. In my understanding, design is a series of processes in visual art, representing the epitome of human intelligence and emotion. Everyone needs to carefully design their own lives.

The book "Design Principles" mentions that although design is primarily an unstable inspiration, it is not something arbitrary. Design is serious, and its standards are high; there is no best, only better. Initially, I thought design was primarily for making huge profits. This perception arose from observing many luxury items that may not seem exquisite but are priced exorbitantly, giving off the impression of a brand scam. However, after reading this book, I realized that many things cannot be arbitrarily defined. Brands and companies that only seek profit are gradually being abandoned. Brands that endure, even if they don't have the latest designs, possess a vast design portfolio. Recently, Starbucks abruptly discontinued the cat paw cup, mainly due to people's love and recognition. Therefore, market trends and people's preferences are highly unpredictable, and product design cannot guarantee success by simply following trends.

As a designer, one should create works that they find beautiful, pursue the most authentic expression, rather than blindly following trends for the sake of fame and fortune. For a designer aiming to represent a brand and provide designed products to the public in the future, responsibility lies in being accountable for one's work, understanding the brand's history, and being responsible to the public and society, as well as to the design business itself. These are the principles that I have learned through reading the book "Design Principles," and I believe they will significantly guide my future career.
