Lectures

During Week 1 we were briefed on the module and assignments.

In the Week2, I learned many basic principles applied in design through video courses.

Gestalt theory helps us understand how we see things as whole pictures rather than just parts. Here’s how it works in art and design, using simpler words:

Contrast: Contrast makes elements stand out, helping to separate different parts of a visual work or attract the viewer's attention to specific elements.

Emphasis: Through design techniques, certain parts are made more prominent to draw the viewer's special attention, highlighting the focal points of the work.

Balance: Balance involves distributing visual elements in terms
of location and size to create visual stability in the work. Balance can be symmetrical or asymmetrical.

Repetition: Repeating elements (such as shapes, lines, colors) can create a sense of rhythm, enhancing the consistency and organizationof the work.

Movement: Guiding the viewer's gaze through the direction, arrangement of shapes, or lines can create a sense of motion or depict movement.

Harmony & Unity: Harmony and unity are achieved by ensuring all elements in the work are visually coordinated and work together to create a sense of wholeness.

Symbol: Symbols are visual elements that represent certain concepts or information, expressing complex information or ideas through graphics or logos.

Word and Image: The combination of text and image can convey information more effectively, enhancing the clarity and appeal of the message. The correct combination of words and images can improve understanding and retention.

UNSDG

Among the 17 projects at UNSDG, I have chosen the 14th ’Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas, and marine resources for sustainable development‘.

Explanation

Fish are a sustainable resource of the oceans, but excessive fishing can undermine their ability to provide key ecosystem services. The theme of this poster is 'less boats more fish.'

It utilizes contrast, with the left side displaying a dark underwater scene of ships and large fishing nets, while the right side shows free-swimming fish, creating a visual dichotomy.

Emphasis: Emphasis is on the left with nets full of fish in stark contrast to the free-swimming fish on the right, highlighting the impact of human activity on marine life.

Repetition: Repetition is present in the forms of fish and ships.

Harmony & Unity: Harmony and unity are achieved through a cohesive design that uses a related color palette and stylized elements to tie the entire scene together. The two halves of the image, while contrasting, are unified in the message they convey.

Symbol: Symbols are used effectively, with the fishing nets and fish representing human intervention and the consequences of overfishing, while the fish represent the marine life affected by these actions.

Word and ImageThe textual message "less boats more fish" complements the imagery. The design aligns the text with the two contrasting scenarios presented in the visuals, reinforcing the message through the combination of word and image. The two halves of the image, while contrasting, are unified in the message they convey.
