Task3:Type Design & Communication

INSTRUCTIONS

Task 3:Type Design & Communication

The specified letters to be designed include "o l e d s n c h t i g , . ! #". After completing the font, the next step is to create a basic A4 size poster showcasing the designed typeface.

sketch

We must draw the given letter "odhng" and decide whether to draw it all in uppercase or lowercase letters.

I used three different pens to do this task, and in the end, I chose the sketch with a checkmark for digitization

Digitisation

Before digitizing, I made the necessary sketches

This is my first font digitization, and I need to continue improving it.

I started trying to make digitization my idea

The third one is already very close to my idea, but it is still not good enough. e. G and S are very disharmonious

FINAL

This is my final digital product.

RazorGlyphs" is a compound word that combines "Razor" and "Glyphs":

  • Razor: "Razor" means a blade or razor, typically associated with sharp and keen characteristics. In this context, it may imply that the font's lines and shapes are very sharp and clear.

  • Glyphs: "Glyphs" refer to the shapes of characters, such as letters, symbols, or graphics. In font design,"Glyphs" represent the graphical representations of a set of characters.

Therefore, "RazorGlyphs" can be understood as a type of font whose character designs feature sharp and clear characteristics, likely presenting a font style that is sharp and distinctive.

FEEDBACK

WEEK9

The font should be written on the same line, and when using a pen, do not rotate the pen to write. Hold the pen and use only one side of the pen to write.

WEEK11

The sizes are inconsistent, some letters are too thick, while others appear too thin. I have made adjustments.

REFLECTION

Experience: I seek inspiration to design fonts through a large number of designer works. At the beginning, I didn't even know how to use a pen correctly. Through the teacher, I learned how to use a pen correctly and how to design my own font.

Observation: All fonts need to maintain consistency, mainly dealing with different angles of the font.

Discovery: This is my first time using Fontlab, it's very interesting. I spent a long time making fonts and also found that I have many problems that need to be corrected.

FURTHER READING

Upon finishing "Just My Type: A Book About Fonts," I was deeply impressed by this captivating book that delves into the seemingly simple yet culturally, historically, and design-wise rich subject of fonts in a light-hearted and humorous tone.

First and foremost, author Simon Garfield vividly introduces the historical development of fonts. By describing the early stages of printing, I gained a clearer understanding of the origins of fonts. He not only delves into the evolution of fonts across different periods and cultures but also presents the fascinating stories of renowned font designers, making the history of fonts even more intriguing.

Secondly, the book's engaging narratives and interesting stories make learning about font design more accessible. Through depictions of how famous designers created their works, I gained a profound appreciation for the creativity and effort behind font design. These intriguing details heightened my awareness of the fonts I encounter in everyday reading, fostering a keener visual observation of textual expression.

Furthermore, the author provides a profound analysis of the impact of font selection on culture, society, and branding. From the book, I learned that fonts are not merely forms of text but also cultural symbols and brand identifiers. This made me reconsider the font choices in various logos and advertisements, realizing the profound influence of design decisions on our perception.

In conclusion, after reading "Just My Type," I not only gained a more comprehensive understanding of fonts but also became acutely aware of the rich cultural connotations behind textual forms. This book is not only suitable for designers and art enthusiasts but also offers a delightful entry point for general readers, allowing us to derive more joy and inspiration from the fonts in our everyday lives.
